Trendy vs. Timeless

Two terms that are often used interchangeably, but actually represent very different concepts, are "trends" and "design styles." Understanding the distinction between the two can help you create spaces that are both timeless and fresh, without getting caught up in fleeting fads.

In this post we will be discussing the difference between trends and design styles, and how you can use both to create a balanced, beautiful home.

What Are Design Styles?

Design styles are the foundational aesthetic that influences the overall look and feel of a space. Think of them as a design philosophy or approach that stands the test of time. These styles have historical roots, cultural significance, and are often defined by a specific set of colors, materials, textures, and furniture types.

Popular design styles include Mid-Century Modern, Bohemian (Boho), Scandinavian, Industrial, and Traditional.

These styles are built on a set of principles that evolve slowly over time. While they may shift in popularity, the essence of a design style tends to remain constant. If you decorate a room in a particular style, it will still feel authentic even as trends come and go.

What Are Design Trends?

On the other hand, design trends refer to temporary movements that capture the public’s attention for a short period. Trends are often influenced by factors like pop culture, fashion, technology, or even a desire for novelty. They represent what’s "in" at a particular moment, and they can quickly fade in favor of new ideas.

Some examples of interior design trends that have been popular in recent years include accent walls, white or gray interiors, black windows, waterfall islands, large tile.

Trends come and go quickly. What might seem fresh and exciting this year could be overdone and out of style the next. As a result, trends can feel a bit more disposable, which is why it’s important to strike a balance when incorporating them into your home.

How They Work Together

The key to a timeless home is finding a balance between design style and trends. Here’s how you can use both effectively:

  1. Discover your style: Spend some time researching different design styles to discover what you like best. I would also consider researching what styles are popular in your area. It is a good idea to design the inside of your home based on the architectural style that the exterior of your house is.

  2. Research elements of that style: Make a list of characteristics of that style. Discover designers that have a similar style as you. Make a plan on how you can incorporate these design styles in your home.

  3. Embrace timeless design elements: While trends may be fleeting, there are design elements that have staying power. A comfortable sofa, beautiful hardwood floors, or a well-designed gallery wall can withstand the test of time, allowing you to update smaller details as trends change.

  4. Remember that your home does not have to be "up to date" all the time. If you have a trend that you really like, use it! Even if it is dated.

Example

This kitchen, which was designed by Joanna Gaines with Magnolia, is transitional. Transitional design is one of my favorite design styles, which is why I chose this example.

Some characteristics of this design style include:

  • Color: Transitional design often uses neutral colors like white, cream, and gray, with some pops of color.

  • Texture: Transitional design uses varied textures to create visual interest, rather than bold patterns or ornate details.

  • Furniture: Transitional design uses a mix of linear and curved furniture, like structured chairs and a couch with subtle curves.

  • Lighting: Transitional design uses modern lighting fixtures, like metallic finishes.

  • Balance: Transitional design balances masculine elements with feminine elements, like modern chairs and nesting coffee tables with delicate mirrors.

  • Natural light: Transitional design celebrates natural light and a relaxed feel.

This picture includes many of these transitional design styles. For example, it contains mostly neutrals, with an added pop of color from the rugs. The furniture has subtle curves. It contains modern lighting fixtures, and has natural light.

It also contains some current trends. Some examples of this are: The boxy hood cover, the counter-to-ceiling cabinets, the shelves in the island, the oversized island, and open shelving.

If you need help navigating styles vs. trends, be sure to hire a qualified designer. You won't regret investing in your space to make it timeless!
