When it comes to interior design, the choice of metal finishes can significantly influence the overall aesthetic of a space. Traditionally, many designers adhered to the rule of matching metals to create a cohesive look. However, the modern trend embraces the art of mixing metals, allowing for a more dynamic and personalized design. I like to choose. a mixture of both brass and polished nickel in my designs.
Brass: The Timeless Classic
Brass has made a significant comeback in recent years, celebrated for its warm, golden tones that add a touch of elegance to any space. While it has made a comeback, I believe that it is still a trend that may change in the next few years. Here are some key attributes of brass:
Warmth: The rich hue of brass brings warmth and sophistication, making it ideal for both traditional and contemporary settings.
Versatility: Brass works well in various design styles, from rustic to modern, allowing it to blend seamlessly with different decor.
Patina Development: Over time, brass develops a natural patina, adding character and depth to the finish.
If I were designing a new home, I would use brass for things like cabinet knobs and lighting. I would not use it for plumbing fixtures as it is a trend and will most likely not always be in style. Instead, I would use polished nickel. This finish is beautiful and will stand the test of time.
Polished Nickel: The Sleek Modern Choice
Polished nickel is another favored finish in modern interior design, known for its sleek appearance and reflective quality. Here’s why polished nickel stands out:
Contemporary Appeal: Its shiny surface gives a modern, sophisticated look that complements contemporary interiors beautifully.
Neutral Base: Polished nickel pairs well with a variety of colors and materials, making it a versatile choice for any design scheme.
Durability: Resistant to tarnishing, polished nickel maintains its luster with minimal maintenance, making it a practical option for high-use areas.
Combining Brass and Polished Nickel
When combined, brass and polished nickel create a stunning contrast that enhances the overall design. Here are some tips for effectively mixing these two finishes:
Balance: Ensure that both finishes are used in a balanced manner throughout the space to avoid overwhelming the design.
Focal Points: Use one finish as a focal point, while the other serves as an accent, creating a layered and intentional look.
Consistent Elements: Incorporate other design elements, such as textiles or artwork, that feature both finishes to tie the look together.
This picture is a perfect example of these principles. The faucet is a beautiful polished nickel while the mirror is brass. This picture also happens to be one of my favorite powder bathrooms. I love the contrast between the green wallpaper and the pink trim. This design was also created by one of my favorite design studios, Alice Lane.
