Styling Wallpaper Like a Designer

If you are looking to enhance and improve the design in your home, then wallpaper is a great option. Not only can it enhance the aesthetics of your room, but in many instances, wallpaper can protect your walls from every day wear and tear. New peel and stick options make wallpaper application easier than ever before.

The downside to wallpaper is that it can be quite expensive. Additionally, if you have textured walls, then your wallpaper cannot be installed correctly.

Here are some tips to designing a room with wallpaper.

  1. When using more than one pattern in a room, try finding a variety of patterns within your chosen color scheme. A good rule of thumb is to find one pattern that is geometric, one that has a small scale print, one that has a large scale print, and one that has an organic pattern. If you squint and your patterns look the same, then they are too similar to be used in the same room.

  2. Avoid using wallpaper as an accent wall. While many people use accent walls in their designs, accent walls tend to significantly cheapen the look of a room. Instead, try applying the treatment (wallpaper, paneling, paint color, etc.) to the entire room. Wallpaper can be quite expensive. If you cannot afford to wallpaper the entire room, then add a wainscoting to the bottom of the wall and wallpaper the top.

  3. Try wallpapering your ceiling! Not only will this cut down on the overall cost of the wallpaper, but it adds visual interest and uniqueness to your design.

  4. If you are installing the wallpaper yourself, then use a laser level to help you apply the wallpaper. Exactness is key!

  5. Use extra wallpaper pieces to wallpaper over light switches and outlets. This will help your design feel more intentional and will distract from features that you don't want to be seen.
